What does blood bank software cost?
The cost of blood bank software depends on six things: the edition you need, how many centres use it, cloud or on-premise hosting, integrations with HIS and analysers, hardware such as scanners and label printers, and the support plan. Cloud plans spread cost monthly; on-premise is mostly upfront.
What changes the price?
- Edition
- A storage centre (crossmatch and issue) needs far less than a blood centre with donors, camps and component preparation, or a multi-centre network.
- Number of centres
- Hub and spoke networks are priced per centre; additional storage centres usually cost less than the hub.
- Cloud or on-premise
- Cloud is a monthly or yearly licence with hosting and backups included. On-premise needs your own server and IT staff, with a yearly support fee.
- Integrations
- Connecting to an HIS, analysers or IoT temperature loggers adds setup work once.
- Hardware
- Barcode scanners, label printers and tablets for camps. Many centres already have some of these.
- Training and data import
- Usually a one-time cost; importing existing donors and stock saves months of re-entry.
What should you budget for besides the licence?
- Barcode label printer and scanners at the counter and on wards
- Staff time for training and a short parallel run with paper
- Annual support and updates
- For camps: tablets, which the offline app runs on

Questions people ask
Is cloud or on-premise cheaper?
Cloud usually costs less in the first years because there is no server to buy and backups are included. On-premise can cost less over many years for large networks with their own IT team.
Is there free blood bank software?
Some free or open-source tools exist, but check who supports them, whether they enforce safety stops and whether they keep the registers your licence requires.
